How to Install Mac OS Big Sur on Dell Inspiron 5520
If you are looking for a way to transform your Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop into a Hackintosh, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will show you how to install Mac OS Big Sur on your Dell laptop using OpenCore, a bootloader that allows you to boot Mac OS on non-Apple hardware.
Before we begin, please note that this process is not officially supported by Apple or Dell and may void your warranty. You will also need a compatible WiFi card, as the original one will not work with Mac OS. We recommend the Broadcom BCM94352Z A+E Key Type card, which you can find online for around $20.
Also, make sure you have backed up your important data and have a Windows installation USB in case something goes wrong and you need to restore your system.
What You Will Need
A Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop with Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, 4 GB or more RAM, and Intel HD Graphics 4000.
A USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of storage space.
A Mac computer or a virtual machine running Mac OS Catalina or Big Sur.
A Broadcom BCM94352Z A+E Key Type WiFi card (optional but recommended).
The following files: OpenCore Configurator, EFI OC folder, Broadcom WiFi Fix, Broadcom BT Fix, Battery Fix, and I2C Fix. You can download them from the links in the description of this video: How to Install macOS Big Sur on Dell Laptops - YouTube.
Step 1: Create a Mac OS Big Sur Installer USB
On your Mac computer or virtual machine, open the App Store and download the Mac OS Big Sur installer app. It should be around 12 GB in size.
Once the download is complete, plug in your USB flash drive and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the name \"USB\" using Disk Utility.
Then open Terminal and type the following command:
sudo /Applications/Install\\ macOS\\ Big\\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB
Enter your password when prompted and press Y to confirm. This will erase your USB flash drive and copy the Mac OS installer files to it. This may take some time, so be patient.
Step 2: Copy the EFI OC Folder to the USB
Once the USB creation process is done, open Finder and mount the EFI partition of your USB flash drive by pressing Command + Shift + G and typing /Volumes/EFI.
Then open the EFI OC folder that you downloaded earlier and copy its contents to the EFI partition of your USB flash drive. You should see two folders: BOOT and OC.
Eject your USB flash drive and plug it into your Dell laptop.
Step 3: Boot from the USB and Install Mac OS Big Sur
Turn on your Dell laptop and press F12 repeatedly to enter the boot menu. Select your USB flash drive as the boot device and press Enter.
You should see the OpenCore menu with several options. Choose Install macOS Big Sur and press Enter.
The Mac OS installer should load after a few minutes. Choose your language and continue. Then go to Disk Utility and format your hard drive as APFS with the name \"Macintosh HD\". Make sure you select the whole drive, not a partition.
Then go back to the main menu and choose Install macOS Big Sur. Select Macintosh HD as the destination and follow the on-screen instructions. The installation process will take some time and may reboot several times. Each time, make sure you boot from the USB flash drive and choose Macintosh HD from the OpenCore menu.
